Congrats To The New Leaders of the League of Women Voters

Congratulations to the newly elected leadership at the New Orleans League of Women Voters. The League elected Ms. Lea Young as president, Rosalind Blanco Cook 1st Vice-President, Annemarie Dewey as 2nd Vice-President, Judy Fisher as Treasurer, and Aimee Bussells as Secretary. They also selected Joyce Corrington, Barbara LaFleur, Marilyn Landiak, Anne Meese and Ann Middleton as Directors. Congrats to all!

The League provides an invaluable service to our community as a resource for voter education, election information, and voter engagement. The public service they provide improves our Democracy and our community. Not only do they provision these important services for all, they also serve as steady advocates for women’s issues on the State and National levels. So congratulations to all. With the strength of the New Orleans League’s new leadership team, I have no doubt that they will continue to be a powerful public force for good.

Governor Vetos SB 577 – Equal Pay Task Force

Governor Jindal Vetoed SB 577 this weekend. Check out our Statement on the Governor’s actions:

By vetoing SB 577, Governor Jindal chose to celebrate his membership in the coalition of the status quo and missed his opportunity to elevate women in our State for our common benefit: He chooses to do nothing about the one of our nation’s worst gender pay gaps and turns his back on a basic concept even he should understand: equal pay for equal work. Where there are clear disparities, it is a concern to our state.” Read the whole statement here.

Parole Legislation Becomes Law

SB 536 was signed into law as Act 669 over the weekend. I authored this bill to move Louisiana in line with the best practices in Parole Supervision fees in the nation. Too often, children are saddled with unworkable charges and fees for violating even minor parole orders. While it is important that these orders be followed, it’s incumbent upon our society to lift barriers for children trying to get their lives on the right track after a conviction. This bill will limit the fees to a level recommended as a national standard for rehabilitation and will open an door for successful re-entry for many children seeking a better path.

Become A Mentor!

Closer to home, we must take every opportunity as a community to help our young people avoid violent confrontation and learn the life skills to place them on a path to success and away from tragedy. To that end, mentorship becomes an essential tool in this fight, and the New Orleans area has many outlets for concerned individuals to become involved in the life of a young person. In addition to the schools in your neighborhood, here are some great places to get involved:
